The Best School Gym Floors

By John Scillieri Hours Published on

The world of indoor sports is very diverse.  Choosing the right type of flooring solution for a particular sports activity can make all the difference in player safety and performance.  So, what are the best flooring choices for a school gym floor?  Let’s break it down.

How to Choose the Best Type of Flooring for Your Gym

Before we delve deeper into each flooring material’s characteristics, we should highlight the most important criteria they must meet — ensuring a safe environment for athletes to work out. The floor should perform well in the following aspects:

  • Shock Absorption — Depending on the type of activity played on its surface, the sports floor should offer the right amount of shock absorption.  Both poor and excessive shock absorption can lead to soreness in the joints and possibly even injuries.
  • Friction — The ideal amount of friction also depends on the type of sport.  For example, a basketball court should offer just enough surface friction to prevent players from slipping, but not too much.  Otherwise, it will affect their performance and movement.
  • Maintenance — Floor hygiene is paramount.  Some floors are easier to clean than others and require fewer maintenance costs.

Hardwood Floors for School Gym Floors

Hardwood flooring is almost synonymous with sports floors.  Whether it’s a high-school gym or a top-level sports arena, hardwood maple floors are the preferred solution for the vast majority of facility operators. Hardwood flooring looks beautiful and is one of the most durable flooring materials on the market.  For a school gym floor, it offers endless design options.  You can customize colors, logos, and other aesthetic features to make your hardwood court unique.

Since most hardwood floors have subfloor systems, they offer better shock absorption, ball bounce, and better overall performance for fast-paced sports. However, there are two main drawbacks of hardwood sports floors: they’re more expensive to install and require higher maintenance costs than other flooring solutions.

How to Protect a Hardwood Gym Floor

Although hardwood school gym floors are incredibly durable, they’re very prone to wear-and-tear from tables, chairs, and hard-soled shoes.  This is worth considering if you run a school gym or a multi-purpose facility with hardwood floors.  It’s essential to shield your hardwood floor when it’s not being used for sports events.

These floors are an expensive investment and require airtight protection if you want to ensure maximum longevity.  One of the most effective ways of protecting your multi-purpose hardwood flooring from scratches and scuffs is to use floor covers.  They’re simple, easy to use, and are a handy tool for protecting your hardwood floor.

Rubber Sports Flooring

Rubber sports floors for a school gym are one of the best flooring solutions currently available on the market, offering consistent performance across the board.  This includes exceptional shock absorption, ball rebound, structural stability, and vertical deformation.  Thanks to the specific manufacturing process of rubber floors, they are resistant to scratches and stains.

Rubber sports floors have very high moisture tolerance and are water-resistant.  Another great advantage of rubber sports floors is they’re one of the easiest flooring choices to maintain.  They don’t require an extensive list of tools and cleaning supplies.

When considering whether or not a flooring material is the best choice for the school gym, many operators base their decision on price.  With that in mind, rubber sports flooring is one of the most economical options out there. It’s an affordable flooring solution for those on a tight budget.

Polyurethane School Gym Floor

Polyurethane sports floors are the most versatile of the three on this page and they’re suitable for almost any sports activity.  Polyurethane is an excellent choice for multi-purpose sports facilities.  The material offers excellent wear-and-tear resistance, and you can easily resurface it when needed.

As an all-around sports flooring solution, polyurethane can be used for recreational and professional sports and non-sporting events and manifestations.

While they can’t match hardwood sports floors’ performance in a sport such as basketball, polyurethane sports floors can be used for many types of sports activities.  Much like rubber floors, polyurethane flooring solutions are very durable and can endure heavy equipment and athletic activity.  This makes them an ideal solution for any fitness center, strength training facility, or school gym floor.
