Listen, we’re from New Jersey. We work all over the Northeast, but Jersey is home, and more than 20 years of NJ gyms have taught us what local floors go through: salt and slush every winter, dry heat, humid summers and packed school calendars.
New Jersey Gym Floor Refinishing: Two Ways to Do It
Almost every wood gym floor needs one of two services. The right one depends on how worn the finish is and whether you want new lines or logos.
Screen and recoat (every year)
We buff (screen) the top layer of finish and put down a fresh coat. We don’t sand into the wood, so it is dustless. The work takes one day, then the finish needs 3 to 5 days to dry. In New Jersey it typically costs about $0.30 to $0.60 per square foot, depending on the size of the gym, the location, oil- or water-based finish, and the condition of the floor. Learn more about gym floor screening and recoating.
Full sand and refinish (every 6 to 10 years)
We sand the floor down to bare maple, fix damaged boards, seal it, paint new game lines and logos, and apply new finish coats. The work takes 8 to 10 working days (sometimes less), then the finish needs about a week to dry and cure. Our sanding equipment captures about 98% of the dust. In New Jersey it typically costs about $3 to $7 per square foot. The price depends on the same factors plus the complexity of the painted game lines, logos and artwork. Signs Your Gym Floor Needs Refinishing
- The finish looks dull, or players are slipping. A screen and recoat usually fixes it.
- Gray or bare wood shows in the traffic lanes, around the foul lines or at the doors. The finish has worn through, so it’s time for a full sand.
- Lines and logos are faded, or you want new colors or a new court layout.
- Deep scratches, black marks or stains that a recoat won’t cover.
- Water damage, cupping or loose boards. Start with a gym floor repair, then refinish so it blends in.
How Our NJ Refinishing Jobs Work
- Free on-site visit: we look at the floor and tell you honestly whether a recoat is enough.
- Scheduling around your calendar: summer for full sands, and summer, winter or spring break for recoats.
- Prep: we seal off the gym and protect the rest of the building.
- Screening or sanding, depending on the job.
- Seal, game lines and logos (full refinish), painted to your school’s layout.

- Walk-through and care tips for your custodial staff.

Gym Floor Refinishing in New Jersey: FAQs
Who refinishes gym floors in New Jersey?
J & J Gym Floors refinishes gym floors across New Jersey from our base in Wayne. Since 2001 we have screened, recoated, sanded and refinished school, church, college and club gyms, and we have completed more than 50,000 projects. Call 973-801-7219 for a free on-site consultation.
How much does it cost to sand and refinish a gym floor in NJ?
A full sand and refinish in New Jersey typically costs about $3 to $7 per square foot. The price depends on the size of the gym, the location, whether you use an oil- or water-based finish, the condition of the floor, and how complex your painted game lines, logos and artwork are. Call 973-801-7219 or email john@gymfloors.com for a free estimate.
How much does a gym floor screen and recoat cost in NJ?
In New Jersey a screen and recoat typically costs about $0.30 to $0.60 per square foot. The price depends on the size of the gym, the location, whether you use an oil- or water-based finish, and the condition of the floor. Call 973-801-7219 or email john@gymfloors.com for a free estimate.
How long is the gym closed for refinishing?
A screen and recoat takes one day of work, then the finish needs 3 to 5 days to dry. A full sand and refinish takes 8 to 10 working days (sometimes less), plus about a week for the finish to dry and cure. Most New Jersey schools book recoats over a school break (a Friday plus a Monday-holiday long weekend can work, but it’s tight), and full sands over the summer.
How often should a gym floor be refinished?
Screen and recoat a maple gym floor every year, and plan a full sand and refinish every 6 to 10 years. Yearly recoats protect the wood, so the floor goes longer between full sandings. We can look at your floor and tell you honestly which one it needs.
Is sanding a gym floor dusty?
Much less than you might think. Our full sand captures about 98% of the dust, and a screen and recoat is dustless. We still seal off the gym and protect the rest of the building before we start.
Which parts of New Jersey do you serve?
We serve all 21 New Jersey counties, from Bergen, Passaic, Morris and Sussex in the north to Monmouth, Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Atlantic and Cape May in the south. Our office is in Wayne, in Passaic County, so North Jersey jobs are close to home, but we schedule work statewide.
When should New Jersey schools schedule gym floor work?
Most New Jersey schools book a full sand and refinish over the summer and a screen and recoat over summer, winter or spring break. Book early, because summer dates fill up fast. We work around your calendar and plan the job so the floor has time to cure before games and events.
How do New Jersey winters affect a gym floor?
Rock salt and slush tracked in from parking lots scratch the finish and can leave a white film. Dry indoor heat also opens small gaps between boards. Use walk-off mats at every entrance, dust mop daily, and keep the gym’s temperature and humidity steady.
Do you repair gym floors in New Jersey after leaks or water damage?
Yes. We repair water-damaged, cupped and buckled gym floors across New Jersey, including after roof leaks and storms. Stop the water first, then call us. We check the boards and subfloor, replace what is damaged, and sand and refinish so the repair blends with the rest of the court.
