The Unique Needs of Middle School Gym Floors

Middle school gyms face unique challenges. They’re high-traffic areas that host a wide range of activities, from physical education classes to competitive sports and school assemblies. The ideal gym floor for a middle school needs to be:

  • Durable enough to withstand constant use
  • Safe for students of varying sizes and skill levels
  • Versatile to accommodate multiple sports and activities
  • Easy to maintain and clean
  • Attractive and customizable to boost school pride

With more than 20 years of experience, we’ve honed our expertise to meet these specific needs, providing flooring solutions that stand up to the test of time and the boundless energy of middle schoolers.

Our Comprehensive Services for Middle Schools

We offer a full range of services to ensure your middle school gym floor is always in top condition, supporting your students’ athletic endeavors and your school’s events.

Installation Services

When it comes to installing a new gym floor, we offer several options to suit your school’s needs and budget:

Hardwood Flooring

Our premium hardwood floors, made from maple, are the gold standard for basketball courts and multi-purpose gymnasiums. They offer excellent shock absorption, reducing the risk of injuries, and provide the perfect amount of traction for quick movements and sudden stops.

Synthetic Flooring

For schools looking for a more budget-friendly option that still delivers on performance, our synthetic floors are an excellent choice. These floors are incredibly versatile, low-maintenance, and can withstand heavy use, making them perfect for busy middle school environments.

Rubber Flooring

Ideal for weight rooms and fitness areas, our rubber flooring options provide superior shock absorption and durability. They’re perfect for protecting both your students and your equipment in high-impact areas.

Custom Gym Floor Design

We don’t just install floors – we create experiences. Our custom design services allow you to incorporate your school colors, mascot, and logos into the floor design, fostering school spirit and creating a sense of pride among students and staff alike.

Maintenance and Repair

Regular maintenance is key to extending the life of your gym floor and ensuring it remains safe for your students. We offer:

  • Regular maintenance programs tailored to your floor type and usage
  • Annual screening and recoating services to maintain your floor’s protective finish
  • Emergency repair services to quickly address any issues and minimize disruption to your school’s activities

Refinishing and Resurfacing

Even the best-maintained floors will eventually need more comprehensive care. Our refinishing and resurfacing services can breathe new life into your gym floor:

  • Full sanding and refinishing for hardwood floors, removing years of wear and tear
  • Resurfacing options for synthetic floors to restore their appearance and performance

Customization Services

Make your gym floor a point of pride for your school with our customization services:

  • Incorporation of school logos and mascots into the floor design
  • Precise game lines and court markings for various sports
  • Custom color options to match your school’s colors and enhance school spirit

Choosing the Right Flooring for Your Middle School

Selecting the perfect flooring for your middle school gym involves careful consideration of several factors:

  • Budget: Both initial installation costs and long-term maintenance expenses
  • Usage: The types of activities and intensity of use the floor will need to withstand
  • Maintenance requirements: The time and resources your school can dedicate to floor care
  • Safety: The floor’s ability to reduce the risk of injuries
  • Aesthetics: How the floor contributes to the overall look and feel of your gymnasium

Each flooring type has its own set of pros and cons:

Hardwood Flooring

Pros:

  • Classic look and feel
  • Excellent performance for basketball and other court sports
  • Long lifespan with proper maintenance
  • Can be refinished multiple times

Cons:

  • Higher initial cost
  • Requires regular maintenance
  • Can be sensitive to moisture

Synthetic Flooring

Pros:

  • More affordable than hardwood
  • Low maintenance requirements
  • Highly durable and resistant to moisture
  • Available in a wide range of colors and designs

Cons:

  • May not have the same premium feel as hardwood
  • Cannot be refinished like hardwood
  • May have a shorter lifespan than well-maintained hardwood

Rubber Flooring

Pros:

  • Excellent shock absorption
  • Highly durable and low maintenance
  • Great for weight rooms and high-impact areas

Cons:

  • Not suitable for court sports
  • Limited design options compared to other flooring types

What a Typical Middle School Gym Floor Project Looks Like

Most middle school gym floor projects are done over the summer or a long school break. Here is what a typical project looks like, from the first visit to the yearly recoat.

Consultation, Design and Sanding

Free on-site consultation: we walk the gym with your facilities team, check the finish and the wood, look for dead spots, loose boards and water damage, and take measurements.

Proposal and design: you get a written proposal and a color layout showing your game lines, school colors, mascot and logos before any work starts.

Sanding and repairs: for a full refinish we sand the maple down to bare wood, replace damaged boards and fix dead spots.

Game Lines, Finish and Yearly Recoating

Game lines and logos: we lay out and paint basketball, volleyball and PE lines plus your center-court logo and wording.

Finish coats: we apply the sealer and finish coats and let the floor cure before the gym reopens.

Yearly recoating: a screen and recoat each year keeps the finish protecting the wood, so you can go much longer between full sandings.

Between projects, dust mop the floor every day, use walk-off mats at the entrances, cover the floor for assemblies and events, and wipe up spills right away.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does installation typically take?

Installation time can vary depending on the type of flooring and the size of your gymnasium. Generally, you can expect the process to take 2-4 weeks. We always work closely with schools to schedule installation during breaks or summer vacation to minimize disruption.

How often does a gym floor need to be refinished?

For hardwood floors, we recommend screening and recoating annually and a full sand and refinish every 6-10 years, depending on usage. Synthetic floors don’t require refinishing but may need resurfacing every 7-10 years.

Are your floors safe for middle school-aged children?

Absolutely. Safety is our top priority. All our flooring options are designed to provide appropriate shock absorption and traction to reduce the risk of injuries for students of all ages.

Can we use the gym for other events besides sports?

Yes! Our floors are designed to be multi-purpose. Whether you’re hosting a school dance, an assembly, or using the space for standardized testing, our floors can handle it. We can even provide advice on the best ways to protect your floor during non-athletic events.
