How to Choose the Best Indoor Sports Flooring for Your Facility

By John Scillieri Hours Published on

When picking a new indoor sports floor for your facility, it’s best to be mindful of the material’s functionality and value for money.  To calculate the latter, you’ll have to include the overall price of installation, durability, and maintenance cost during the floor’s lifespan.  Other significant aspects to consider are athlete safety and performance.

It’s crucial to decide on a flooring solution that best fits your facility and is most suitable for the activities it will host.  We’ll share the most useful tips to help you choose the best indoor sports flooring for your facility below.

What to Consider When Choosing Indoor Sports Flooring

Gym flooring should be a durable and strong surface that can endure heavy foot traffic and support heavy equipment and objects.  But, each type of sports flooring material comes with unique characteristics and requirements.

Here are some of the most crucial things you should consider when choosing your new sports floor:

  • Elasticity Properties — Elasticity is critical when it comes to sports floors.  There are different types of floors in terms of elasticity, each excelling in different areas.  Elasticity refers to area elastic, point elastic, mixed elastic, and combined elastic.  The floor’s elasticity properties directly impact athletes’ comfort and performance.
  • Key Performance Features — Each type of sports floor comes with specific performance features in shock absorption ability, friction, and vertical deformation.  In this regard, each sport requires different performance features.
  • The Price — It’s no secret that most facility operators work on a tight budget.  When the time comes to install a new floor, their hands aren’t exactly free to choose just any floor without thinking through every aspect.  The floor’s price is directly tied to the floor’s longevity and performance.  It’s vital to strike the right balance between these three aspects to get the best value for money.
  • The Subfloor — Most types of flooring solutions require a subfloor.  Installing the sports floor directly on the concrete slab isn’t a viable solution for most floors, as it makes the concrete slab prone to damage.  While not a visible part of your court, the subfloor can make a significant difference in its performance characteristics.

Choose Your Floor to Fit Its Purpose

When choosing the best indoor sports flooring, you must consider what sports will be played in the facility.  Some surfaces are better at accommodating certain sports, while others can serve as universal solutions for multi-sports arenas.  Let’s take a closer look at the four most popular types of sports floors and their uses next.

Hardwood Floors

The classic choice and the go-to option for many sports facilities around the country, hardwood maple floors are the perfect flooring solution if you’re going for a traditional look and feel for your sports facility.  Hardwood floors are an excellent choice for many different indoor sports and the right answer for facilities that operate multi-sports gyms.

There are many reasons why most sports facilities decide to go for hardwood flooring.  It offers an unmatched level of quality and is suitable for both weekend athletes and professionals. Hardwood maple floors must adhere to high industry standards and provide unique performance properties.  Of course, all of this comes at a significantly higher price point, as hardwood floors are a significant financial investment.

Polyurethane Floors

Suitable for everything from athletics and basketball to hockey, polyurethane flooring provides the perfect slippage amount while also offering a cushioning effect.  It’s worth keeping in mind that polyurethane is the only type of sports flooring that’s seamless.

Vinyl Floors

Similar in performance to polyurethane floors, vinyl flooring is equally durable and a bit more versatile.  Both are suitable for a wide variety of sports.  When choosing between polyurethane and vinyl floors, the most significant factor to consider is the price.  A vinyl sports floor costs much less compared to a polyurethane one.

Rubber Floors

Easy to install and affordable, rubber sports flooring is becoming a prevalent choice among facility operators.  Since rubber is a water-resistant material, such floors are effortless to maintain and have a high moisture tolerance.

More importantly, they offer consistent performance and are very durable, making them an excellent choice for areas with heavy foot traffic and sports like weightlifting.  Rubber sports floors commonly come in three forms — rolls, mats, and rubber tiles.

Design a Reliable Indoor Sports Floor

Purchasing a new indoor sports floor for your facility is a serious project and requires a lot of planning.  Whether you’re looking for a flooring solution for a specific sport or want to ensure all-around performance for a multi-sports facility, there are many aspects to consider before you make your final decision.
