Does My Hardwood Gym Floor Need Refinishing? How to Tell and Create a Schedule

By John Scillieri Hours Published on

Hardwood gym floor refinishing is more than just for aesthetics. Well-maintained hardwood sports flooring is vital for the safety and comfort of your members. However, the typical gym floor refinishing process takes time and money. What are the telltale signs wood flooring needs refinishing? How can you develop a hardwood gym floor refinishing schedule to have minimal impact on your business?

This article is a comprehensive guide to ensuring the gym floor finish in your indoor sports facility looks its best and performs to the highest standards.

The Importance of Hardwood Floor Maintenance in Gyms

Hardwood gym flooring plays a crucial role in aesthetics and functionality. The gymnasium floor must provide a clean, professional look. At the same time, the sports floor should offer a durable and versatile surface for various physical activities.

A wood gym floor requires shock-absorbing properties to help reduce strain on joints and muscles during workouts. Additionally, it must have a slip-free surface without any trip hazards.

Gym floor maintenance is essential for preserving the longevity and safety of hardwood floors. Proper care, routine cleaning, and annual gym floor refinishing have the following benefits:

  • Prevent wear and tear.
  • Reduce the risk of injuries caused by damaged or uneven surfaces.
  • Preserve the floor’s aesthetics.
  • Preserve its structural integrity, preventing costly repairs or replacements down the line.
  • Prevent a buildup of dust, allergens, and bacteria.

By investing in proper care and upkeep, you can ensure that the wood floor in your gym facility remains a valuable and safe asset.

Signs Your Hardwood Gym Floor Needs Refinishing

Maintaining a hardwood sports floor to a high standard requires recognizing signs that it needs refinishing. Quick intervention can prevent minor issues from escalating into major ones, requiring an entire floor replacement.

What are the common indicators for getting a professional flooring contractor to assess the floor condition?  Here are four telltale signs your wood sports floor may need refinishing:

  • Dullness and loss of shine: Constant activity on gym floors wears down the protective finish on the floor’s surface, causing it to lose its luster. This puts the wood floor at risk of further damage caused by excess moisture affecting the floor’s integrity.
  • Scratches and surface damage: Frequent movement of equipment, dropped weights, or abrasive materials can result in scratches and surface damage. These compromise the floor’s visual appeal and weaken the protective finish, leaving the wood more susceptible to further harm.
  • Discoloration and stains: Exposure to sunlight, spilled liquids, or chemical cleaning agents may cause discoloration and stubborn stains on the hardwood surface. These blemishes impact the floor’s appearance and can signify deeper damage that requires attention to prevent long-term issues.
  • Damaged areas: High-impact activities, such as heavy weightlifting or dropping equipment, can lead to localized damage on the gym floor. Whether it’s dents, cracks, or warped sections, these damaged areas compromise the floor’s integrity and pose safety hazards if left unaddressed. Regular inspections are crucial to identify and repair such issues promptly.

Assessing the Condition of Your Gym’s Hardwood Floor

Before calling a sports flooring contractor, it makes sense to assess the floor surface. It’s vital to check for signs of damage like wear, scratches, dents, unevenness, or buckled floorboards.

Here is a short guide on how to assess the condition of the gym floor finish:

  • Clear the area: Remove any equipment, mats, or obstacles from the gym floor to have a clear view of the entire floor surface.
  • Inspect for dullness: Examine the floor for signs of dullness or loss of shine. Walk across different sections and observe how light reflects off the surface to identify areas needing attention.
  • Check for scratches and surface damage: Inspect the floor closely for scratches, scuffs, or any surface damage. Run your hand over the wood to feel for any rough patches, and visually assess the extent of the damage.
  • Examine for discoloration and stains: Check to see if the discoloration is only on the surface or has penetrated the wood floor.
  • Inspect damaged areas: Focus on high-traffic zones and areas prone to impact. Check for dents, cracks, or warped sections.
  • Evaluate floorboards and seams: Examine individual floorboards and the seams between them. Ensure the boards join tightly without gaps. Check for curled, cupped, or buckled floorboards.

If you’re uncertain about the condition of your gym floor, call a local hardwood flooring company specializing in wood gym floor refinishing.

Creating a Refinishing Schedule

A hardwood gym floor typically lasts 20 to 30 years with proper maintenance. Experts in the sports flooring industry recommend refinishing gym floors every five to ten years. Consistently maintaining the gym and keeping it in top condition will prolong the duration between refinishing jobs.

Here are some top tips on ensuring top performance and longevity of your gym floor:

  • Regular cleaning with dust mops or a vacuum removes dirt and debris and keeps the floor clean.
  • Wipe up spills immediately to prevent staining and water damage.
  • Use protective mats at entrances and high-traffic areas to reduce wear.
  • Schedule professional inspections and maintenance.
  • Use equipment with non-marking wheels and handle weights carefully to avoid scratches.
  • Control humidity conditions to prevent warping or cracking.
  • Implement a strict footwear policy to prevent surface damage.
  • Consider periodic recoating between refinishing to maintain the protective finish.
  • Only use approved hardwood floor cleaners to avoid damage to the finish.

The Refinishing Process: What to Expect

Hardwood floor refinishing involves sanding the existing finish to bare wood and applying several coats of finish to restore the gym floor to its original glory. Repairs to damaged boards are an optional add-on, done only if you ask.

A full sand and refinish takes 8 to 10 working days (sometimes less) to sand, paint the lines and apply a suitable finish to your maple hardwood gym floor. Then plan on about a week for the finish to dry and cure before resuming on-court activities.
