Sanding is a critical step in the refinishing process as it removes the old finish and any imperfections on the surface. The cost for sanding and prep work ranges from $1.00 to $1.50 per square foot. This cost includes removing the old finish and sanding the surface to a smooth, even finish. Repairs aren’t included by default; they’re an optional add-on, priced separately if you ask for them. Proper sanding ensures that the new finish adheres well and provides a smooth, durable surface.
Application of Finish
The application of the new finish is the next step. The type of finish you choose can impact the cost. Oil-based finishes are durable and long-lasting but have a longer drying time and emit strong fumes, costing between $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot. Adding a logo to your gym floor can enhance its aesthetic appeal. The cost for logo application varies depending on the size and complexity of the logo, typically ranging from $500 to $1,500 per logo. A well-placed logo can also serve as a branding tool and create a professional look for the gym.
Custom Graphics
For gyms looking to add custom graphics, the cost can range from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the design and complexity. Custom graphics can include anything from motivational quotes to intricate designs that add character and uniqueness to the gym floor.
Moisture Barrier Application
Applying a moisture barrier can protect your gym floor from moisture-related damage. The cost for this service ranges from $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot. A moisture barrier is especially important in areas with high humidity or where the floor is susceptible to moisture ingress.
Cost-Saving Tips
Regular Maintenance
Regularly cleaning and maintaining your gym floor can extend its lifespan and reduce the frequency of refinishing. Simple practices such as sweeping and mopping can prevent dirt and debris from scratching the surface, while periodic inspections can catch issues before they become major problems.

Factors Influencing Costs
Size of the Gym
The size of your gym is one of the most significant factors influencing the total cost. Larger spaces naturally require more materials and labor, leading to higher overall costs. However, some costs, such as those associated with preparation and finishing, might benefit from economies of scale, where the per-square-foot cost decreases as the total area increases.
Subfloor Condition
The condition of the existing subfloor can dramatically impact the preparation costs. If the subfloor is uneven, damaged, or has moisture issues, additional work will be required to prepare it for the new flooring. This could include leveling the floor, installing moisture barriers, or repairing damaged sections.
Complexity of Installation
The complexity of the installation can also affect costs. For example, installing a custom court design with intricate logos and multiple sports markings will be more expensive than a simple, single-sport layout. Additionally, facilities that require special features like shock-absorbing pads or underfloor heating will see higher installation costs.
Local Labor Rates
Labor costs can vary significantly based on your location. In areas with a higher cost of living, you can expect to pay more for professional installation services. Conversely, in regions where labor costs are lower, you might find more affordable rates.
Long-Term Maintenance
It’s important to consider not just the initial installation cost but also the long-term maintenance expenses. Hardwood floors, for instance, will require periodic sanding and refinishing, which can add to the overall cost over time. Synthetic floors might need less frequent but still regular maintenance to keep them in good condition.
