Gym Floor Refinishing in Ocean County, NJ
Sanding, yearly recoats, repairs and game lines for Ocean County schools, rec centers and private schools, from Lakewood to the barrier islands.
Shore air is hard on gym floors
Ocean County gyms live with salt air, summer humidity and sand that rides in on every pair of sneakers. Grit acts like sandpaper on the finish, and big swings in humidity make maple boards swell in the summer and shrink in the winter. Floors in towns like Point Pleasant Beach, Seaside Heights and Long Beach Island feel it the most, but even inland gyms in Jackson and Manchester see it.
The fix is not complicated. Walk-off mats at the doors, daily dust mopping, steady heating and air in the building, and a screen and recoat every year keep the finish doing its job. When the finish is worn through to bare wood, or the boards are gray or water-stained, it is time for a full sand and refinish instead.

Big districts, small districts and private schools
Ocean County has some of the largest school districts in New Jersey, like Toms River Regional and Brick Township, along with small K-8 districts and regional high schools such as Central Regional in Bayville, Southern Regional in Manahawkin and Pinelands Regional. Lakewood also has a large number of private schools, many with busy gyms that are used for more than sports.
For a district with several gyms, we can plan the work building by building so nobody loses all their indoor space at once. For a single gym that is also the lunchroom and assembly hall, we fit the job into a break and tell you exactly when it will be back in use.

What we do for Ocean County gyms
The only wood gym floors we work on are maple, and one team handles the whole job:
- Sanding & refinishing: sanded to bare maple, new lines and logos, new seal and finish
- Screen & recoat: the dustless yearly coat that keeps the finish protecting the wood
- Repairs: dead spots, damaged boards and water damage
- New maple gym floors: tear-out and replacement
- Game lines & logos: basketball, volleyball, pickleball and center-court art
- Gym wall padding: standard and custom printed pads
How long the gym is out of use: a screen and recoat is usually 1 day of work plus 3 to 5 days of dry time, and it is dustless. A full sand and refinish takes 8 to 10 working days plus about a week for the finish to cure, and our sanders catch about 98% of the dust.

Frequently asked questions
Does shore humidity damage a maple gym floor?
It can. Maple swells when the air is humid and shrinks when it is dry, so small seasonal gaps are normal. Cupping, buckling or boards lifting usually mean a moisture problem we should look at before any refinishing.
How often should an Ocean County school recoat its gym floor?
Once a year for most gyms. Sand and grit wear the finish faster near the shore, so busy gyms should not skip a year. A yearly screen and recoat is far less work than a full sanding and protects the wood underneath.
How long does a screen and recoat take?
Usually 1 day of work plus 3 to 5 days of dry time before normal use. It is dustless and takes one day of work plus a few days of dry time, so it fits a holiday break, or a long weekend with a Monday holiday if the gym stays closed (tight, but it works).
